As per our mission statement, The Rosenfield Fund works with educational institutions and entrepreneurial incubators that focus on tackling socially compelling topics. The main activities include support for scholarships, and prizes for technological innovation. The Borough of Manhattan Community College is one of our key partners.
From their professional activities in downtown Manhattan, Herbert and Audrey, and their colleagues, became aware of the opportunity to bring Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) from its midtown location to downtown. Herbert, together with his close friend Ray O’Keefe and others, worked with then-BMCC president Dr. Joshua Smith to make this a reality.
Following the move in the early 1980s, this group also saw the opportunity to create a fund to assist BMCC with raising money for scholarships and other programs. They helped to establish the BMCC Fund, now called the BMCC Foundation, to assist the College in raising scholarship funds.
BMCC has become the largest community college in New York City with over 20,000 students, many of whom are first-generation college attendees. For more details about BMCC and the BMCC Foundation, please go to bmcc.cuny.edu.
In 1987, as part of their commitment to the college and in consultation with then-President Augusta Kappner, Herbert and Audrey established the Abner B. Rosenfield Scholarship Award to support students who exemplify academic excellence and good citizenship. Over 35 students have received support since its inception. The Abner B. Rosenfield scholarship has also received generous support from Ray O’Keefe.
Herbert and Audrey were early supporters in 1999 of then-President Antonio Perez’s innovative efforts to launch the Out in Two Program. In 2019, working with former President Perez, interim President Karrin Wilks, and then-Vice President for Development Doris Holtz, the Herbert and Audrey Rosenfield Fund directors made a $1,000,000 commitment to endow the Out in Two Program.
